Abstract
  • Cross education is the training of one limb to increase subsequent performance in the untrained contralateral limb (1). The mechanisms behind cross education are still unknown. However, most evidence suggests neurological adaptations are responsible for the physiological mechanism of cross education. Few studies have examined the relationship between attentional focus and cross education. However, most research suggests that external attentional focus produces the best performance. For other types of physical assessments, to determine which attentional focus stimulates maximum strength transfer, an internal and external attentional focus group trained the right knee extensors and flexors for three weeks to compare results in the untrained leg. Data showed a decreased in strength in both the trained and untrained knee extensors, and in the untrained external attentional focus knee flexors. Strength trained knee flexors increased in both attentional focus groups the untrained internal attentional focus group knee flexor strength increased by 3.2%. These results are likely due to detraining in the subjects.
