Abstract
  • Gower’s Confessio Amantis seems, quite often, to slip under the noses of medieval critics despite being one of the most prominent works of late medieval English poetry. Known mostly for his Latin works and for rarely writing in English, Gower made a conscience break from his traditional form to write in a language he was not as so familiar with, due perhaps to the changing tide of political structure, which was starting to focus more on English in the courts rather than French or Latin (a point that can be weighed heavily when looking at many of the reasons why Gower would have written this work). Gower uses his platform as a poet to subtly give the king his suggestions through his performances to the court. Richard II is the first king to use English in the court, as French had dominated the nobility since the Norman Conquest. Because of this, it gave rise to an interesting perspective from both the nobles and those who were not of nobility who were lucky enough to be involved in the elaborate court structure. English as the language of the court also made it easier commoners to take note of their government. Richard II also wished to have more open English literary works, thus resulting in an English Bible and the works of Gower and Chaucer in a digestible format for those that were not of nobility. Having been said, critics seem to overlook vital elements regarding medieval life and history when they overlook Gower’s magnum opus, insisting instead that nothing of value or importance may be gained from looking at Gower,
