- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of caffeine on pulmonary function as determined by spirometric analysis. Specifically, can caffeine act as a bronchodilator and cause an increase in lung volume and rate of flow values. The impact was measured by examining the spirometric values of forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, and peak expiratory flow. It was hypothesized that the ingestion of caffeine would increase all three values. The study was approved by the Hanover College Institutional Review Board with regard to the use of human subjects.
