- Abstract
The Civil Rights movement that took place during in the 50's and 60's was a campaign by African Americans to gain the equality in America that was guaranteed in the constitution. The purpose of the movement was to abolish any discrimination based on race, religion, sex, or national origin. There were several leaders in this time period, but the most famous ones are always remembered such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. Ralph Abernathy, one of the many non-famous activists during the movement, is at the center of this paper. Also I will focus on the tactics that were used during this movement to help capture success. Ralph was a very important person in the Civil Rights Movement in numerous ways such as collaborating with Dr. King and giving him advice or giving speeches at rallies. During this time there were many tactics used to achieve the purpose of the Civil Rights movement. Mr. Abernathy was very influential during this time on organizing the key tactics used to push the purpose of the movement. One of the biggest accomplishments he achieved working during the Civil Rights Movement was the passing of the Voters Right Act of 1965. His role at Selma was crucial to the passing of the federal law. He was one of the courageous people who risked their lives for future generations during this movement and went unknown compared to MLK or Rosa Parks. The overshadowed hero once said, I went to jail 44 times. I've been beaten and left for dead on the side of the road fighting for freedom¦ Yet Rosa Parks is better known in history than Ralph David Abernathy. Why is that? Ralph Abernathy was an important figure in the Civil Rights movement who was heavily involved in the tactics used to bring change in American society. Ralph Abernathy and Martin Luther King Jr. were partners in history and best friends. The achievements of Dr. King wouldn't be possible without the efforts of his partner Ralph Abernathy. Ralph David Abernathy was an overshadowed hero.
