Abstract
  • This chain of events in 1691 and their long-term effects will be the focus of this thesis. In particular, it will seek to answer three questions: 1. Why did the male ecclesiastical leaders use female pseudonyms to censure Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz? 2. How did the controversy affect the rest of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s life? 3. Was Sor Juana’s controversy instructive to the nuns who faced a large-scale confrontation with Church leaders in the late eighteenth century?
