Abstract
  • My work is a satire response to the unattainable standard of beauty in the United States. Less than 5% of the female population have the potential to achieve this ideal standard of beauty. In comparison, nearly 24% of the female U.S. population are heavier than the societal standard for beauty. I believe that what makes a woman truly beautiful is the confidence she has in herself and how she conducts herself every day. Eventually looks change and fade, therefore people will likely remember you for your personality and how you treated others; not for the perfectly groomed eyebrows you have perfected over the years. People will not remember you for how flat your stomach or how nice your legs were; they will remember if you were nice to the person who ate alone every day or if you were always optimistic. What makes a woman truly beautiful are what no one sees yet everyone who meets her notices. However, society and the media have a different opinion and their opinions are represented in the titles of each individual piece. Media and societal opinions affect us almost every day of our lives, and they can begin to affect us as early as 4 to 6 years old. Each title is a quote that someone has said to the woman in the specific piece. My work is meant to push you to ask questions both internally and externally. Who are we to tell others that they are not beautiful?
