Historical Note: John D. Matthews, was a Presbyterian pastor who served churches in Norfolk, Virginia, Baltimore, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Louisville, Kentucky. He was the son of the Reverend John Matthews and was born in Shepherdstown, Virginia, June 19, 1809. He graduated from Jefferson College and was ordained in 1832. Matthews died March 1884 in Dallas, Texas. Francis “Frank” Renshaw Matthews was the son of John D. Matthews. He was born on September 8, 1835 and died on January 13, 1920. Matthews graduated from Centre College in 1856. He lived in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, but due to his wife’s ill health moved to New Mexico and then Trinidad, Colorado.

Scope and Content: This collection contains correspondences from members of the Mathews family, primarily John D. and Frank R. Matthews, of Kentucky and Texas, dated 1870 -1908. The letters discusses topics such as family news, homesickness, death, birth, family, weather, religion, and Christianity. The bulk of the correspondence is written between family members primarily in Lexington, KY and Denison, Texas.
