Historical Note:
Adam Emory Albright was born in Monroe, Wisconsin in1862, one of thirteen children. He attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts (later the Art Institute) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After studying abroad in Munich and Paris, he returned to the United States to marry Clara Wilson, with whom he had three children, including twin boys. The twins, Ivan and Malvin (Zsissly), later surpassed their father's fame as artists. Albright was best known for his portraits of children in natural settings. Based initially in Chicago, and later in Hubbard Woods and Warrenville, Illinois, the Albright family traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Beginning in 1908, Albright took inspiration from summers spent in the Brown County art colony, which provided ample material for his rural scenes. He and his sons Ivan and Malvin set up a studio in an old church building in Warrenville. Albright wrote his autobiography, For Art's Sake, at the age of 90 and died in 1957.
