Scope and Content: The Philalethean Literary Society Records contains materials related to the history of the organization and its involvement on Hanover College's campus, dated 1830-1917. It contains meeting minutes, budget reports, membership rosters, constitution, and library records.

Historical Note: The Philalethean Literary Society was founded on 6 November 1840 with the merger of the Philosophronian and Whig Literary Societies. Originally called the Zelomathean Literary Society, it was renamed the Philalethean Society by members a few days after its founding. The Philalethean Society was present, at Hanover College, from 1840 to 1917. After World War I, it merged with the Union Literary Society, forming the Philal-Union Literary Society.
