Scope and Content: The Walter Stone Papers Collections consists of studies and essays written by Walter Stone while working as a professor of sociology at Hanover College, 1937-60. The collection also contains a few newspaper articles and poems. Research topics include group therapy, informal education, community welfare; recreation; YMCA; Venezuela; sex; marriage; family; Jefferson County; IN; immigration; and community.

Historical Note: Walter Stone was born in 1895. He worked at the Y.M.C.A as an executive and community planner. In 1948 he became the first full time professor of Sociology at Hanover College. Stone established multiple associations on campus for faculty members, such as the American Association of University Professors. While at Hanover he also implemented workshops to better professor instruction of students. Walter Stone was a prolific writer, completing seven books and four hundred articles. He died on 25 December 1971.
