Scope and Content: The Leland Johnson Rivers Research Collection documents the work and research of Dr. Leland R. Johnson on the history and development of America's waterways. The collection contains research notes and documents on flat-boating; development of steamboats and their place in American commerce; reports on the historical definition of stream navigability on numerous rivers and small streams in the Louisville and Nashville districts of the Army Corps of Engineers; notes from official records of the Crops used in his histories of several Corps districts and of the Ohio River Division (later the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division); notes and records used in writing biographies of Corps officers; records pertaining to the historical structure and administration of the Corps; and diverse other topics related to the rivers and streams of the Ohio River Valley.
Historical Note: Leland Johnson held degrees in American history and English from Murray State University, St. Louis University, and Vanderbilt University. He specialized in engineering/construction history and worked with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Energy and the Department of Justice. He also served as a consultant on numerous museums exhibits and history symposia. Among his last projects, he wrote a history of the US Life Saving Service at the Falls of the Ohio and served as a member of the Steamboat Bicentennial Committee at Hanover College. Johnson died at his home in Westmoreland, TN in February 2014.
