Letter from J.W. Lugenbeel to John Finley Crowe, April 23, 1852

Public Deposited

A letter from J.W. Lugenbeel to John Finley Crowe over donations for Harriet Thompkins. The letter enclosed $30 for Mrs. Thompkins as well as the news that a number of household items would be donated to her cause and shipped free of expense. Additionally, the letter laments the passing of 5/8s of the Thompkins family and notes that her story seems to be an exception among the others which attempted to colonize Liberia. Although, the letter does note of an African fever which most settlers get, which killed most of the Thomkins family. Lugenbeel disputes some of Mrs. Thompkins claims over the severity of the African Fever and claims that he found the people of Liberia to be quite healthy despite their irregular manner of living. Lugenbeel refers to Liberia as a home of the colored and interdicted to the white race...
