Hanover Plan Records, 1949-1966 - Finding Aid

Public Deposited

Scope and Content: The Hanover Plan Records documents the efforts of the Self-Study Committee of Hanover College to create a new curriculum for the institution. The collection contains copies of the final versions of the Hanover Plan, committee reports on the implementation and results of the new curriculum, and promotional materials.

Historical Note: The Hanover Plan represented a significant change in the organization and conception of a liberal arts education at Hanover College. Resulting from a self-study grant from the Lilly Endowment in 1960-61 to assess the academic priorities and direction of the College, the Hanover Plan provided for the adoption of a 14-14-5 academic calendar with three courses in the longer terms and one intensive course during the five-week term. The new guidelines also called for senior seminars, comprehensive examinations, and independent studies to foster critical thinking skills necessary to face the burgeoning threats of the Cold War. The Hanover Plan went into effect in September 1962. The self-study committee, composed of Dorothy S. Bucks (English), Arthur R. Porter, Jr. (Economics), and John E. Yarnelle (Mathematics), devoted itself full-time over the course of an academic year to interviews, meetings, and consultations with faculty, students, and staff at Hanover, as well as faculty at a variety of other institutions across the country—all with the goal of improving education, dealing with large increases in enrollments, and working around a dearth of potential new faculty members to teach the increasing numbers of students.
