Scope and Content: Diaries and commonplace books written by Herman I. Stern, 1872-1900. The first volume details Stern’s experiences while a student at Heidelberg College in 1872, including college life, friends, professors, and coursework. The other volumes contain Stern’s notes and personal thoughts. Much of the writing relates to God and religion, but also contains significant passages on ethics, philosophy, history, poetry (Byron, Elliott, Shelley), and literature. Stern also includes commentaries on his readings, the author's speeches presented to church and civic organizations, camping trip lists, as well as short diary entries about his work as a preacher, his wife and children, and his publications.

Biographical Information: Herman Isidore Stern was born in Ohio in 1854. He authored several works including Evelyn Gray, 1890; The Gods of our Father, a Study of Saxon Mythology, 1898; and A Socialist Catechism, 1912. He later moved to Indiana and then California. He died in 1926.
