Scope and Content: Joshua Bolles Garritt was born in Litchfield, Connecticut on 23 January 1832. He graduated from Hanover College in 1853 and Princeton Theological Seminary in 1856. He received a Ph. D. from Wooster University and LL. D. from the University of Kentucky. He began teaching at Hanover in 1856 and a year later married Sadie Crowe, daughter of John Finley Crowe. Garritt taught languages at Hanover College and specialized in Latin and Greek. He retired in 1906 after teaching for fifty years. He died in Hanover, Indiana on 31 August 1918.

Historical Note: The Joshua B. Garritt Papers document the life of Joshua B. Garritt and his work at Hanover College from 1837 to 1931. Materials include journals, correspondence, photographs, and legal documents and covers topics such as education, children, sickness and health, teaching, learning, updates on former students, love, religion, Hanover College, professional accomplishments and his retirement. Scrapbooks contain commencement programs, board reports, newspaper clippings, and programs for the literary society events and exhibitions.
