Scope and Content Note: Photograph album of Dr. Rachel E. Hoffstadt from her 1929-1930 tour of Europe. Includes images of well-known sights in England, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, and France.

Historical Information: Rachel Hoffstadt was born on 14 June 1886 in Madison, Indiana. She graduated from Hanover College in 1908. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago in 1915, and her Doctor of Science in Hygiene from Johns Hopkins University in 1923. Hoffstadt was the first female graduate of Hanover College to earn a PhD. During World War I, she worked as a bacteriologist at Camp Servier, SC, where she developed an oral typhoid vaccine. She later served as a Professor of Biology at Marshall College and Milwaukee-Downer College before taking a position at the University of Washington from 1923-1962. Hoffstadt died in Washington on 14 February 1962.
