Historical Note:

John Finley Crowe (1787-1860) was born June 16, 1787, in Green County, Tennessee. Crowe spent two years in private study before attending Transylvania University in Lexington to become a minister, graduating in 1813. Also in 1813, he married Esther Alexander (1792-); they had twelve children. In 1823, they moved to Hanover, IN, for Crowe to become the pastor of the Hanover Presbyterian Church. Crowe founded Hanover Academy on January 1, 1827. Hanover Academy became Hanover College after receiving its charter on January 1, 1833. Crowe worked in many roles at the college throughout his years, including teacher, principal, vice-president, spokesman, trustee, and president of the Board of Trustees. After retiring in 1857, Crowe continued to teach at Hanover College until his death on January 17, 1860, at the age seventy-two.

Scope and Content: The Crowe Family Papers includes materials relating to the life of John Finley Crowe, Hanover College, the Presbyterian Church, and the Crowe Family, dated 1811-1948. The collection contains business and family correspondence, historical accounts, journals, sermons, lecture notes, and photographs. Topics discussed throughout the collection include God, faith, Hanover College business, Presbyterian business, slavery, family, 19th century social customs, family dealings and workings.
