Scope and Content: The William A. Caldwell Photographs collection contains both photographs (individual and small photobook) and stereo views (also known as stereo cards) of Hanover College, Hanover, and Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana. Topics include waterfalls, nature, the Ohio River, Hanover College buildings, Hanover College students and their activities, and Hanover College faculty including Professor Andrew Harvey Young, an 1871 Hanover College graduate, and Mary Louise Fitton, the college librarian. Some of the nature-oriented locations pictured in the collection include Butler Falls, Chain Mill Falls, Chimney Rocks, Clifty Falls, Hart's Falls, Hermitage (or Horseshoe) Falls, Madison Road, and Niagara Boulder. Caldwell also published a book with an assortment of nature and local photographs from Hanover along with Hanover College entitled Souvenir of Hanover, Indiana; it can be found in the Hanover College Duggan Library.

Historical Note: Hanover College was founded in 1827 by John Finley Crowe, a Presbyterian minister, in southern Indiana as a Presbyterian Seminary. The college was the first private college in the state of Indiana. William A. Caldwell was an 1874 graduate of Hanover College. He worked as a photographer in Indianapolis, Indiana. He took photographs of Hanover College and the scenery in and nearby Hanover and Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana. Andrew Harvey Young was an 1871 graduate of Hanover College. He served as the principal of the Hanover Academy, or Preparatory School, from 1972-73. Young became a natural science professor at Hanover College in 1879 and taught until his death in 1926. Mary Louise Fitton was the librarian of Hanover College from 1928-1966.
