Historical Note: John Edward Horner was born on 12 December 1921 in New Jersey. He graduated from Morristown High School in New Jersey and received his Bachelor's degree from Drew University in 1943. After graduation he returned to Morristown High School to teach English and Latin, as well as coach football, basketball, and baseball. He completed his M.A. at Columbia University in 1947. During the 1949-1950 academic year, he was a Fulbright Exchange Teacher-Scholar in London, Rome, and Athens. He later returned to teach Latin and English at Drew University before moving on to Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas. He worked there as assistant professor, Director of Athletics, and assistant to the president until he left to earn his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1955. He later served as assistant to the president and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Omaha. In 1958 he accepted the position of President of Hanover College. President Horner retired in 1987. Dr. Horner passed away on 13 February 2014.
Scope and Content: The John E. Horner Papers documents the professional life of the 13th president of Hanover College through correspondence, reports, committee minutes, speeches, publications and photographs. Materials date from 1940-1990 (bulk 1958-1987).
