Scope and Content: This collection documents the Literary Series Steering Committee Records documents the committee's work at Hanover College during its most active years from 1952-1960. Included are correspondence, information about literary guest speakers, administrative notes, Literary Series Steering Committee notes and minutes, promotional materials, publicity, and brochures.

Historical Note: After the 1952 visit of William Carlos Williams to the Hanover Campus, students in the English department convened to create the Literary Series, a lecture series focused on hosting literary figures on the Hanover Campus for the purpose of spreading creative initiative amongst the student population. Managed by the Literary Series Steering Committee under the supervision of Dr. Leland Miles, the Literary Series was inaugurated on 22 April 1956, by the lecture of John Ciardi, a poet and poetry critic. Other speakers included Shakespearean scholar Hardin Craig, poet Randall Jarrell, anthologist and poet Louis Untermeyer, poet and critic Allen Tate, Historian Peter Viereck, Indiana University Professor of English Roy Battenhouse, editor Norman Cousins, dramatist Lillian Hellman, novelist Jessie Stuart, novelist, Budd Schulberg, linguist Harold Whitehall, and poet Langston Hughes. Information about the committee dwindles after the departure of Dr. Miles from Hanover in 1960.
