Scope and Content: Records of the Madison Presbytery in Indiana dated 1826-1870. The collection contains six volumes of meeting minutes from both the Old School and New School of the Madison Presbytery. Topic contained in the volumes includes reports, petitions, evaluation of ministerial candidates, church reports, founding of Hanover College, missionary work, committee reports, curriculum, slavery, Freedmen, Civil War, discipline against members, discussions on the state of religion, financial reports, and publications.

Historical Note: The Madison Presbytery was formed from the west section of the Salem Presbytery in 1825. On May 29, 1826 Madison Presbytery became part of the new Synod of Indiana. The presbytery existed until about 1870 when boundaries and names changed for presbyteries in Indiana.
