Scope and Content: The Carey R. Macdonnell Photographs collection contains photographs collected by Carey R. Macdonnell, a 1913 Hanover College graduate. Topics within the photographs include Hanover College students, missionaries, and Calla Harrison, the first female graduate of Hanover College in 1883.

Historical Note: Hanover College was founded in 1827 by John Finley Crowe, a Presbyterian minister, in southern Indiana as a Presbyterian Seminary. The college was the first private college in the state of Indiana. Carey Ryker Macdonnell was a 1913 Hanover College graduate. He was a Phi Delta Theta. He was the son of Margaret Emma Ryker Macdonnell, a 1886 Hanover College graduate and one of the first women to graduate from the college. He married Vivian Mercer Gaddy, a 1915 Hanover College graduate. Calla James Harrison was an 1883 Hanover College graduate. She was the first woman to graduate from Hanover College after full admission was given to women in 1881; however, women had been attending classes at the college since 1869. She served as a missionary in Japan and later Hawaii.
