Long Trust and the creation of Long College as coordinate institution of Hanover College.

Biographical Note: Henry C. Long was a businessman from Indianapolis, IN, who died 19 January 1901. In his will, he created a trust to fund the creation and ongoing support of a women's college. In accordance with his will, a board was established after the death of his wife, Sara Long, in 1916. In 1921, the two adopted children of Mrs. Long brought suit against the board, contending that the trust had not carried out the terms of Mr. Long's will. The courts eventually decide the suit in favor of the Board. In 1941, the Board began negotiations with Butler University to create Long Junior College. The contract was terminated in 1946. In 1947, the board signed an agreement with Hanover College for the creation of Long College for Women with Dorothy Bucks serving as the first Dean of Women. Although Hanover had begun admitting women in 1880, the college was interested financial support Long College would provide. The arrangement lasted until 1978, when by mutual agreement, the contract was terminated and the assets of the trust were transferred to Hanover College.
