Scope and Content: The Margaret Ryker Macdonnell Photographs collection contains photographs collected by Margaret Ryker Macdonnell, an 1886 Hanover College graduate. Topics within the collection include Hanover College students, missionaries, and Calla Harrison, the first female graduate of Hanover College in 1883.

Historical Note: Hanover College was founded in 1827 by John Finley Crowe, a Presbyterian minister, in southern Indiana as a Presbyterian Seminary. The college was the first private college in the state of Indiana. Margaret Emma Ryker Macdonnell was an 1886 Hanover College graduate. She was one of the first women to graduate from the college after the first woman Calla Harrison, a close friend, received a diploma in 1883. She married Thomas Macdonnell. Calla James Harrison was an 1883 Hanover College graduate. She was the first woman to graduate from Hanover College after full admission was given to women in 1881; however, women had been attending classes at the college since 1869. She served as a missionary in Japan and later Hawaii.
