Scope and Content: The Henning Family Papers document the lives of Carl and Robert Henning of Jefferson County, Indiana from 1850-1955. It includes correspondence, newspaper articles, post cards, photographs, small pennants, fabric badges, and scrapbooked records. Materials from both Carl and Robert Henning cover many interesting topics on how Hanover relates to the outside world as well as some of the history of the area. Some of the most mentioned topics are those such as Hanoverians in the Civil War, World War I and World War II, as well the personal history of Carl Henning.

Historical Note: Carl Henning was born April 4, 1879 in Scott County, Indiana to Dr. Robert Henning (1847-1897) and Sarah Jane Henning (1855-1879). He attended Hanover College become a doctor and military medical reserve in World War I after he graduated in 1902. He then went on to become one of Hanover's doctors and marries Rispah Robertson (1887-1945) in 1912. They had two children Sarah Elizabeth and Robert Matthew (1916-1972) who also graduate Hanover College in the 1930s. Both children went on to become teachers and Robert fought in World War II in the Air Force. Before he died Dr. Carl Henning had become not only the primary physician for Hanover, but also Town Historian and Air Raid Warden during World War II. He died November 24, 1958 and was buried beside his wife at Hanover Cemetery.
