Scope and Content: The Adkinson Family Correspondence features letters dated 1863-1877 from four of the Adkinson brothers. The letter primarily relate to the service of Samuel, Oliver and Joseph with the United States Army during the Civil War such as camp conditions, troop movements, concern for home, and the death of Abraham Lincoln. Many of the letters discuss the death of Joseph Adkinson in 1864 including his injury, medical treatment, leg amputation, hospital conditions, doctors, nurses and notes from Irwin Adkinson after visiting Hammond General Hospital in Point Lookout, MD where Joseph died.

Historical Note: Samuel Adkinson (1834-1894), Joseph M. Adkinson (1841-1864), Oliver C. Adkinson (1843-1873) and Irwin D. Adkinson (1837-1875) were born in Switzerland County, Indiana to Francis and Eliza Adkinson. Joseph and Samuel served in Company A of the 3rd Regiment Indiana Calvary for the Union during the Civil War. Joseph died 7 June 1864 at Point Lookout, MD as a result of gunshot wounds in battle. After the war, Samuel worked as a farmer. He died 29 August 1894 in Carrollton, KY. Irwin did not serve in the military during the war. He later worked as college professor. He died 25 February 1875 in West Concord, NH. Oliver C. Adkinson served in Company B, 140th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. He worked as a farmer in both Kansas and Indiana. He died 12 December 1873 in Switzerland County, IN.
