Historical Note: The course “HIS 227 Twentieth-Century America & Your Family” is taught at Hanover College by history professor Dr. Sarah McNair Vosmeier. The course description reads, This course explores the intersection of national history and personal history. Interviewing your own family members will give you insight into how ordinary people remember the past and how they experience change over time. Lectures will supply the national perspective and larger context. Discussions and other assignments help you compare your family's experiences with those of other Americans living through the same events. Throughout we will be identifying, critiquing, and making historical arguments. The focus of the course will be on a final paper that makes an argument about the connection between your informant(s) and a major theme or event in American history.

Scope and Content: This collection primarily consists of essays and papers written by students of “HIS 227 Twentieth-Century America & Your Family,” in which they reflect upon how historical events have impacted the lives of their families. It also includes course syllabi, Oral Histories. There is also a time capsule created by a class in 2011. It is currently restricted and is to be opened by the class members at a future reunion.
