Historical Note: Elias Riggs Monfort was born on 2 March 1842 in Greensburg, Indiana. Raised by his minister father, Dr. Joseph G. Monfort, Elias attended Hanover College for two years until serving with Company F, Ohio 75th Infantry Regiment during the United States Civil War. After his discharge from the army due to a battle injury, he returned to Hanover and graduated in 1865. He then graduated from the Cincinnati Law School. He set up a law practice in Greensburg, IN and would later server as the prosecuting attorney for the Fourth Judicial Circuit District of Indiana and then district attorney of the Twenty-second District of Indiana. Eventually he moved to Cincinnati where he became postmaster and was elected to a life member of the National Association of the Postmasters of the First Class. On 6 September 1867, Monfort married Emma A. Taylor. Together they had a son and two daughters: Joseph, Hannah, and Margret. Monfort died in Oaks Corners, NY on 29 July 1920.

Scope and Content: Materials related to the life of Elias Riggs Monfort and the Monfort family. Included are business and personal correspondence, such as letters E.R. Monfort wrote to his family while serving during the Civil War. There are also photographs of the family, newspaper articles, family history and genealogy, and ephemera.
