Scope and Content: Documents and correspondence related to the work of Alfred A. Millis as president of Hanover College. Included are a report to the trustees, a letter to Presbyterian Church ministers, newspaper clippings, and other documentation about his work and career. It also includes a manuscript copy of Millis’ book on the history of Hanover College and a 1907 graduation memory book created by Millis’ daughter Eloise from Crawfordsville High School.

Historical Note: William Alfred Millis was born in Paoli, Indiana on June 17, 1868. He received his A.B. at Indiana University in 1889 and the following year he earned his Master’s degree at the same institution. Millis worked as the superintendent of schools for Paoli, IN from 1889-94. He continued in the same position at Attica, IN from 1894-1900 and at Crawfordsville, IN from 1900-08. He was the dean of Winona Lake Summer School from 1895-1902 and a moderator for the Presbyterian Synod of Indiana. He worked as the president of the Indiana State Y.M.C.A., and director of McCormick Theological Seminary. Millis served as the 11th president of Hanover College from 1908 to 1928. He died in Crawfordsville, Indiana on May 23, 1942.
