The groundbreaking for Old Classic Hall began in the spring of 1853. The contractors on the project were Messrs., Cochrane and Pattie of Madison, IN. The building was completed in 1856. It was originally named Main Hall, but was often referred to as Literary Hall. It was renamed Classic Hall in 1900. It housed classrooms, lecture rooms, a chapel, an auditorium (seating nearly 500), an art gallery, offices, and rooms for literary societies. In December of 1941, the building caught fire and was destroyed.
