This sculpture is one of 14 mounted antelope heads created to emulate trophies of poached animals, drawing attention to the useless slaughter of animals purely for sport and trophies. Many hunted species are unlawfully killed and moved toward extinction, creating an ecological crisis that is easily avoidable. Each piece in the original installation was designed and created in clay and then fired either in a Raku Kiln or an open-air pit firing kiln. All 14 works had a unique patina and surface texture/coloring based on the firing technique that was implemented. The antlers consist of a wire structure with nylon hose stretched over them to simulate the spirit and uniqueness of each animal. Gesso and acrylic paint are added to the nylon to finish the surface texture and presentation. The finished work is mounted on a wooden plaque to complete the trophy replication. This individual work of art was purchased as a part of the Mary Louise Greiner Student Art Award in April, 2023.
