Photograph of front of Hanover Presbyterian Church. Church founded in 1812. Named after Hanover, New Hampshire, hometown of the first pastor Rev. Thomas Searle's wife. Town later adopted the name. John Finley Crowe, founder of Hanover College, preached at Hanover Presbyterian Church from 1823-1832,1838-1846, and 1854-1856. Church pictured is second building of Hanover Presbyterian Church. Originally academic building called College Edifice for Hanover College. Built in 1832. Tornado damaged Hanover College academic buildings in 1837. Hanover Presbyterian Church proposed giving saved money intended for new church building to college for repairs and reconstruction of buildings if church body could temporarily worship and meet in College Edifice until college repaid money and helped build new church building. Hanover College agreed. Church released college from agreement provided that church body 'shall have permanently and for ever use and occupancy of the chapel room in said building (College Edifice)' in 1842. Hanover College transferred deed of College Edifice and land to Hanover Presbyterian Church during the 1850's-1860's. Building renovations occurred in 1871. Construction removed second story, replaced south façade, and installed steeple.
