She was the first woman to graduate from Hanover College after full admission was given to women in 1881; however, women had been attending classes at the college since 1869. She served as a missionary in Japan and later Hawaii. Writing on front reads Calla Harrison, College Friend. Writing on back reads Presented to Hanover College by Carey Ryker Macdonnel A.B. '13 son of Margaret Emma Ryker A.B. 1886 (Mrs. Thomas M. Macdonnell) Mrs. Macdonnell was a longtime friend of Miss Calla J. Harrison, 1883, first woman graduate of Hanover College.
