- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between relative hip strength and running velocity in multiple planes. This study examined eight well-trained male athletes to determine their relative hip extension strength via the 3RM barbell hip thrust and via a cybex dynamometer (isokinetic). The athletes were then tested on 40-yd dash, 3-cone drill, and pro-agility drill, to determine relationships between relative hip extension strength and running velocities in multiple planes. Pearson’s correlations were completed to determine the relationships with an a priori level of significance set at p ≤ 0.05. It was hypothesized that the isokinetic cybex dynamometer hip extension peak torque would be a better determinant of running velocity in multiple planes. Data concluded that (1) there is an inverse relationship between 3RM barbell hip thrust and 40-yd dash. (2) There is an inverse relationship between cybex dynamometer hip extension and running velocity in multiple planes (40-yd dash, 3-cone drill, and proagility). (3) The cybex dynamometer is a better determinant than the 3RM barbell hip thrust for running velocity in multiple planes. (4) Relative hip extension strength can be used as a determinate for running velocity in multiple planes in terms of the isokinetic cybex dynamometer.
