Abstract
  • The history of Eve as an archetype for women has been long and arduous. Because she was the first to eat the forbidden fruit, many interpretations of the Garden of Eden have focused on her as the source of sin and evil in the world today. Amongst many scholars who are reinterpreting the Garden of Eden story, Meyers explores the history of Eve and her reputation. She reports that the first known critique of Eve appeared in the book of Sirach, or the Wisdom of Ben Sira, which is only included in the Catholic Bible. In his book, Ben Sira states, “From a woman was the beginning of sin, / And because of her we all died.” Meyers argues that as Ben Sira’s accusation began to influence the Church and its writing, the origin story begins to have a much more negative effect on women in the church: “the more Eve is identified as the source of sin, the more urgent becomes the need to control, subdue, and dominate her. Eve is seen as representative of her sex, and thus all women are regarded as requiring subjugation to wiser and superior male figures.” These interpretations of Eve seeped into roles for women in the Church, female sexuality, and women’s independence. Because they needed to be controlled, women’s roles in the Church and in the family became dependent upon their husbands or other men.
