Abstract
  • I come from a science background, I want to know everything there is to know. When coming into college, I wanted to go the premed route, so I decided that biology would be the best overall fit for what I wanted to do. Throughout my college experience, I've taken a plethora of biology courses, and would say that I have more of a scientific/logical brain compared to an emotional one. At least that was the way it was until my sophomore year, once my sophomore year began I took a course called Environmental Philosophy with Dr. Kate Johnson. Through this course, I learned that I needed to have an emotional connection with the things that I was learning in biology or else I wouldn't be able to relate to it. It took reading an excerpt from Braiding Sweetgrass called Asters and Goldenrods to come to this conclusion. It was through this reading that I learned that science was too narrow-minded, it reduced life forms to mere objects. It never asked “Who are you?” and “What do you know?”, instead it was always “What is it?” and “How does it function?” But this isn't sufficient to get the whole story, which is why throughout my senior thesis, I decided to combine my scientific knowledge and emotional knowledge in order to demonstrate the bigger picture. My thesis demonstrates how we need to change our view of the natural world, and how we need to take responsibility for the issues that we are causing. It shows my personal growth and my discovery of how I came to be. If you had asked me 10 years ago today, what my career and passion was, I would’ve told you that I wanted to be a veterinarian and make a lot of money. My only passion was money, it motivated me in every way possible, and it determined what I wanted to become and what I wanted my future to look like. Luckily, all of that changed when coming into college and that's what we are going to discuss throughout my senior thesis.
