  • This report details the revitalization of the Meade LX200 16-inch telescope located at the Hanover College Observatory, which had been non-operational due to multiple mechanical and technological issues. Initiated as a senior engineering project, the team was tasked with diagnosing and resolving issues including a runaway motor, oil leaks, and a stuck declination (DEC) motor lock, which had rendered the telescope inoperative for nearly a decade. The project was conducted with a strict budget of $2,500, with most of the funds provided externally from the Physics and Astronomy Department, limiting the direct financial impact on our team's allocated budget. Key to the project's success was the implementation of the Autostar Upgrade Kit, which replaced the outdated and malfunctioning PCB with modern, simplified technology that enhanced the telescope's functionality and reliability. This upgrade, complemented by the integration of a Revolution Imager and WiFi control, not only fixed the existing issues but also modernized the telescope to be comparable with contemporary models such as the Meade LX200 'GPS' series.
    The project outcomes included a fully operational telescope that significantly enhances the observational capabilities at Hanover College, providing a valuable tool for education and research. The total expenditure amounted to only $1,700, demonstrating a cost-effective approach to solving complex engineering problems.
