Abstract
  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of blood flow restriction exercise on arm volume in the exercised and non-exercised biceps. Specifically, the effect of blood flow restriction bands (BFRB) on blood flow was determined during high-intensity and low-intensity resistance exercise. Increased blood flow increases arm volume and this was measured with water displacement in accordance with Archimedes Principle. Subjects completed three exercise protocols on three separate days as follows: (1) LIR - low-intensity resistance exercise with BFRB, 4 sets of dumbbell curls at 20% of 1 RM; (2) LI - the same treatment as # 1 without BFRB; and (3) HI – high-intensity resistance exercise without BFRB, 4 sets of dumbbell curls at 80% of 1 RM. In all three treatments, sets were performed to failure (inability to perform repetitions in a strict manner).
