Abstract
  • The purpose of this study is to determine the effects the Nike Vaporfly 4% Flyknit shoes and Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% shoes have on running economy in collegiate cross country runners. In this study, eight male collegiate cross country runners completed one session which included three, five-minute running trials. The independent variables were the type of shoes used: subject’s training shoes, Nike Vaporfly 4% Flyknit shoes, and Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% shoes. The dependent variable was running economy as measured by oxygen consumption (VO2). The three trials performed in this study were five-minute runs performed with the ParvoMedics TrueOne Metabolic System, mask, and a treadmill. The Nike Vaporfly 4% Flyknit shoes, Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% shoes, and the subject’s training shoes were randomly assigned for each trial. It was hypothesized that both Nike shoes would have a lower VO2 than the subject’s training shoes at the same speed, and the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% shoes would have a greater running economy than the Nike Vaporfly 4% Flyknit shoes. Pilot data demonstrated that the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% improved the running economy when compared to the Nike Vaporfly 4% Flyknit shoes and the subject’s training shoes. The Nike Vaporfly 4% Flyknit shoes had an improved running economy compared to the subject’s trainers. Data concluded that (1) the Nike Vaporfly 4% Flyknit shoes generated a lower VO2 compared to the subjects’ baseline training shoes by 3.83% (p = 0.04). (2) the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% shoes produced a lower VO2 compared to the subjects’ baseline training shoes by 4.87% (p = 0.04). (3) the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% shoes had greater improvement in running economy compared to the Nike Vaporfly 4% Flyknit shoes due to the lower VO2 by an additional 28.2% (p = 0.11).
