Abstract
  • Silica aerogels are lightweight, mesoporous materials which, when doped with transition metal complexes, have proven to be efficient heterogeneous catalysts for a variety of reactions. To assess their usage as a heterogeneous catalyst for Suzuki coupling reactions, palladium-polymerized silica gels are made using a sol-gel method detailed by Deshpande et al. The gels are subcritically dried using ethanol and hexanes to produce aerogels, which are then used as the source of palladium (II) acetate in a Suzuki reaction. Due to time constraints, the experiment is cut short, and inconsistent data is collected, but the gels show potential for further studies and analysis.
