Abstract
  • Samuel Austin Moffet was a man who wanted to spread Christianity to an area of the world that had been rejecting Western ideology for hundreds of years. That place was Korea, which, similar to China and Japan, had largely rejected all western ideology and religions for hundreds of years. This resulted in pretty fierce rejection of anyone who came and preached western ideas or religions. One such man was Samuel Austin Moffet who would come from the small town Madison Indiana and would move to the opposite side of the world to teach a people ideas and religion that they had been taught to hate and reject by their ancestors based on the experiences and on the principles to protect their way of life and the lives of their ancestors. Many had tried and failed so Moffet knew he had to adapt how he presented himself and what method he used to get the Koreans not only to trust him but also to listen to his words and what he had to say. That was the main challenge he faced was being heard in a country that refused to listen or even let him get his words out. Researchers have found that Samuel Austin Moffet would impact the entire nation of Korea for decades to come, however many debate if his impact is a positive or negative impact due to the history of Missionaries throughout many periods of human existence such as Jesuit missionaries during the middle ages and monks on the silk road calling other religions heretics and doomed for hell. Moffets came up with his methods based on previous history and understood that many different parties interpret missionary work and what they represent as negative, so he strove to change the views of missionaries and how they do god's work.. While people argue if Moffet was a part of the historical missionary views or if he represents change of how Christianity spread and presented itself, Moffett forever changed the foundation of the social, religious and education systems in Seoul, Pyongyang, and all of Korea. Moffett's impact is a result of many things such as he established western religion and culture in many pockets of Korea which had never happened before and eventually would spread creating a population of Christian believers native to Kore. Also he helped establish an education system that still exists today as well as founded schools that became hubs of culture and learning for many generations and are still used today. While Moffet would pass away in 1939 he created a lasting legacy in the Korean education and religious sectors during his time in Korea that still are praised and respected today in modern Pyongyang, Seoul, and most of Korea.
