- Abstract
As Augustus recognized the continuing representations of the kind of women with more power and sexual autonomy than traditional Roman women, he felt Romans’ morality had declined. Clodia Metelli, who is famously known both historically and in literature, is represented as a woman who encompasses male anxieties of women becoming too independent and overstepping their boundaries. Clodia and other women like her are considered the late republic’s “new women” inasmuch as they are expressing a newfound independence. As a result of these new women, Augustus changed the way that women were represented through his introduction of marriage legislations, and sex became a public issue. Roman love elegy became disreputable and poets began expressing their concerns for this moral decline as well. Augustus’ wife Livia served as the quintessential role model of Roman women and embodied the honors imposed onto women by Augustus– modesty, chastity, and obedience. Livia is portrayed as a woman who displayed the values of the traditional, reverting from the values of the Late Republic’s new women. Women who did not embody these qualities were shamed and punished, such as Augustus’ own daughter Julia. Ultimately, women’s value in the Age of Augustus was dependent on how much they benefited their Roman husbands and fathers and furthermore, the Roman patriarchy.
