In order to incorporate the feelings of grief and experiences through my art I decided to create a series through the medium that is called chain pulling. Chain pulling is the act of dipping a particular type of string into either ink or paint, laying that string on a piece of paper in a certain composition then putting something flat on top of that string and pulling it from between the paper and the flat object. The end result is, at times, resembles a calla lily flower. Calla lilies can symbolize several different things. They can symbolize death or marriage. significant meaning. They are frequently used in the creation of bouquets of flowers at funerals as well as to decorate a head stone. A broken calla lily symbolizes someone who has died before their time. I have experienced the recent loss of multiple loved ones, which has been the catalyst for the current research and reflection into this style of artistic expression and exploration. The reasoning behind choosing this medium and the process of chain pulling is the unpredictability and subtle chaos that emerges from the act itself. When you are placing the string down onto the paper and then you lay the flat object on top of it, you no longer are able to see the composition of the string which means you have little to no control over what the end result will be. It is chaotic in the sense that, in many cases, that is how the death of a loved one is; unpredictable, the hardest form of death to handle. As a species we are increasingly fearful of the things that we are unable to control, we try to stay away from them altogether and not acknowledge that these things are out there, but we have to face them at some point.
