Abstract
  • The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of the Slingshot, a bench press assistance device, on a one repetition maximum (1-RM) bench press and to determine whether it allows individuals to perform more repetitions at a submaximal load. Twenty resistance trained male subjects participated in three different sessions. The first session was a baseline testing day as well as a familiarization day with the Slingshot a training aid for bench press. On this day subjects were to complete a dynamic warm-up, and then progressively build up the amount of weight they were bench pressing by 5 pounds until failure. The subjects were separated into two groups. These groups were a 1-RM group as well as a maximal repetition at a submaximal load group. The independent variable was the type of bench press being performed; either raw/unequipped or Slingshot assisted/equipped. During the 1-RM test, weight was measured to see if the Slingshot enabled individuals to lift more weight. In the submaximal load testing, maximal repetitions were measured to see if the Slingshot allowed individuals to perform more repetitions. Data collected showed a mean increase in repetitions at a submaximal load of 26.2% (4.5 repetitions) and a mean increase of 10.5% (25 lbs) over a 1-RM. This data concluded that the Slingshot is an elastic assistance device and can influence the bypassing of the sticking region. The Slingshot enables individuals to lift more weight on a 1-RM test and perform more repetitions on a submaximal load test suggesting that it can be a useful training aid.
