- Abstract
Authors of Young Adult fiction construct lesbian adolescent bodies through the themes of compulsory heterosexuality, the medicalization of bodies, the perpetration of homophobia through violence, the act of self-harm, and racial or cultural identities. These factors influence a lesbian protagonist’s body image, view of other bodies, and her sexual relations with other teenage women. Using contemporary realism, Young Adult authors formulate the relationship between bodies and lesbian teenagers as familial, societal, and self-policed, physically and sexually in danger, and sexually active without education and resources. This leads to the creation of unhealthy lesbian adolescent role models for today’s lesbian youth.
