The author speaks of the first commencement after Hanover received its new charter, a suggestion that their mutual friend Monfort should be given an honorary doctorate, a debate about marriage to a sister-in-law, his approval of the Presbyterian Assembly's actions on slavery, the evils and sin of slavery. A note on the back of the letter, from a later date, indicates that the author was David V. Smock.
