Historical Note: Henry Ellet Crawford was born in Orange County, North Carolina on 1 December 1838. He graduated from Hanover College with a B.A. in 1859 and an A.M. in 1867. He studied at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1859-1862. Crawford was ordained a minister on 10 October 1863 and served as a pastor in Pleasant and Jefferson, Indiana from 1862-1865. He died on 5 February 1866 in Pleasant, IN.

Scope and Content: Twenty-one speeches and essays written by Henry E. Crawford, dated 1857-1859. These were presented to the Philalethean Literary Society and Society of Religious Inquiry at Hanover College. Topics include time; teachers; education; moral and physical law; medicine; dignity; labor; nature; human nature; religion; China; and independent thinking.
